Merlin

Well mainly Merlin. First of all I just want to have a small breakdown about the hopefully temporary demise of my laptop. It was being slow and unresponsive and generally pissing about so I gave it a metaphorical boot up the arse by turning it off and turning it back on again. That is how you fix computers after all. Unfortunatly my laptop took issue with this and has decided that it likes the process of waking up so much that it is going to do that again and again and again in a continuous loop without ever actually, to extend the metaphor a tad further, getting the hell out of bed! Seriously I turn it on, it does its loading screen, picture of an apple, circle thing going round, loading, loading, funny "I is dead" noise, blank screen then we are back to the loading screen and the whole thing starts again.

Grrrr!

As you can imagine this has made me very unhappy. Am going to take it to the repair shop down the road that does Mac on Monday but still... why at the weekend laptop? Why?

So I watched Merlin on a friend's laptop and was cheered up at least a little.

This was one of the Epic ones I think. Most of the time Merlin jogs along in the slightly cracky land of wacky goings on with magic and we love it for it but then it hits us with an episode like this which forces you to remember how this story ends. Generally they are Morgana episodes. Generally they very much apeal to me and this was no exception.

Althouugh, Merlin, dear, may I just point out one thing? People might stop calling you an idiot if you didn't act like an idiot so much. Seriously, not only does he leave what must have been the most obvious trail to the druids he then doesn't flipping tell Morgana that he has magic too at the end. Seriously I was all psyched up for a really touching scene that involved Merlin reasuring Morgana that she wasn't alone and then lighting a candle or something. Seriously in my head it was brilliant. What can you do? It just didn't quite make sense that he wouldn't tell her seeing as she knows that he knows about her magic and everything/ There doesn't seem to be a reason to keep it a secret.

They do have really good chemistry though. I can see where Arthur is coming from there.

Arthur has felt slightly odd this season. In the first episode he seemed to be back to square one with Merlin however, as I think I said, after thinking about that I think that he really was teasing Merlin. The thing about Arthur is that he is somewhat of a chameleon. He has a very strong sense of circumstance and he tailors his whole manner to suit the occasion. So in episode three he is firmly in his Captain of the Guards/Royal Enforcer/Daddy's Terrior mode, all business. It isn't until after the crisis is past that he lets himself relax and we get the Arthur who is Merlin's friend for a bit. Note the wonderful body language, much more open than the rest of the episode and an arm round Merlin's shoulder. Arthur has a very well developed sense of what is appropriate for any given situation. With Merlin I feel that his default mode is as Merlin's master, he is a Prince with his fairly idiotic servant, it takes a particular sort of crisis whether it is Merlin's villiage being in trouble or Merlin mooning after the king's ward to switch him to Friendship Mode. The fact that this happens at all is unusual. Of course he get things wrong sometimes. In the second episode he continues to act in "Master Mode" when in Gwen's house when he shoudl be, as she points out, be acting as a guest. I doubt that Gwen would have reacted as she did had Arthur acted like that towards her at the Castle.

We should also always remember that even when Arthur is being Daddy's Terrier he still remembers those he cares for. How much did I love him sticking up for Gwen at the start of the episode? Or his rather pointed questions about Merlin after viewing the results of Merlin's trademark blown up bars trick?

In conclusion Merlin is still my happy place, even when they are being Epic!
